Why Does My RCD Keep Tripping?

A tripping RCD is frustrating but it's doing its job — protecting you. Here's how to identify the cause and what to do next.

An RCD (residual current device) is a safety device that cuts the power almost instantly if it detects a fault. When it trips, it is doing exactly what it is designed to do — but a repeatedly tripping RCD needs investigating.

What causes an RCD to trip?

The most common causes are:

  • A faulty appliance — a damaged flex, faulty element or failing motor can cause current to leak to earth
  • Moisture in a socket or fitting — particularly in kitchens, bathrooms or outdoors
  • A wiring fault — damaged insulation or a loose connection
  • An overloaded circuit — too many high-current appliances on one circuit

How to identify the cause

Start by unplugging all appliances on the affected circuit, then reset the RCD. If it stays on, plug appliances back in one at a time until it trips again — the last appliance you plugged in is likely the culprit.

What if it trips with nothing plugged in?

If the RCD trips even with all appliances unplugged, there is likely a wiring fault. Do not keep resetting it — call a qualified electrician to diagnose the problem.

What if it trips immediately on reset?

This usually indicates a more serious fault — possibly a short circuit or significant wiring damage. Switch off the affected circuits at the consumer unit and call us.

Can I just replace the RCD?

Replacing an RCD without diagnosing the underlying fault will not solve the problem — the new RCD will trip for the same reason. Always find and fix the root cause first.
