A Guide to Outdoor & Garden Lighting

From security lights to feature garden lighting, here's everything you need to know about outdoor electrical installations.

Outdoor lighting can transform your garden, improve security and add real value to your home. But outdoor electrical installations must be done correctly — here is everything you need to know.

Types of outdoor lighting

The most popular options for domestic properties include:

  • Security lights — PIR-activated floodlights that deter intruders and illuminate dark areas
  • Garden feature lighting — low-voltage LED lights to highlight plants, paths and water features
  • Patio and decking lights — recessed or surface-mounted lights for entertaining areas
  • Pathway lighting — bollard or ground-level lights to illuminate paths and driveways
  • Festoon lighting — decorative string lights for garden entertaining

Does outdoor lighting need a dedicated circuit?

Yes — outdoor lighting should be on a dedicated RCD-protected circuit. This protects against electric shock and ensures the outdoor installation does not affect your indoor circuits.

What IP rating do outdoor fittings need?

Outdoor fittings must have an appropriate IP (ingress protection) rating. For general outdoor use, IP44 is the minimum. For fittings that may be exposed to water jets or submersion, a higher rating is required.

Can I install outdoor lighting myself?

Any outdoor electrical work that involves a new circuit or connection to the mains must be carried out by a qualified electrician and notified under Part P. DIY outdoor electrical work is a common cause of serious accidents.

Smart outdoor lighting

Smart outdoor lighting systems allow you to control your garden lights from your phone, set schedules and integrate with other smart home devices. We can install and configure smart outdoor lighting as part of any installation.
