How to Prepare for a House Rewire

A full rewire is a significant project. Here's how to prepare your home and what to expect during the process.

A full house rewire is one of the most significant electrical projects you can undertake. Proper preparation makes the process smoother and less disruptive. Here is what to expect and how to get ready.

Before the work starts

Before we begin, we will carry out a full survey of your property to assess the scope of work and provide a detailed quote. This is the time to discuss any specific requirements — additional sockets, new lighting circuits, or changes to the layout.

Clearing access

To run new cables, we need access to walls, ceilings and floors. Before we arrive:

  • Move furniture away from walls where possible
  • Clear loft spaces and under-floor areas if accessible
  • Remove pictures and wall-mounted items
  • Ensure we have clear access to the consumer unit area

The first fix stage

The first fix involves chasing channels in walls, routing cables through floors and ceilings, and installing back boxes for sockets and switches. This is the most disruptive stage — some dust and mess is unavoidable, but we work as tidily as possible.

Do you need to move out?

For a full rewire, it is usually more practical to vacate during the first fix stage. We will discuss this with you and agree a schedule that minimises disruption.

The second fix stage

Once the plasterwork is complete, we return to fit sockets, switches, light fittings and the new consumer unit. This stage is much less disruptive.

Certification and sign-off

On completion, we carry out full testing of all circuits and issue an Electrical Installation Certificate. We also notify your local authority under Part P of the Building Regulations — this is a legal requirement.
