A Weybridge homeowner wanted their outdated 12V stair lights replaced with modern 230V LEDs. Rather than chasing out the entire staircase wall, Brad Neil Electrical chased in 35mm flush boxes at each light position — a neat, minimal-disruption solution that kept the wiring contained, avoided full redecoration, and left the customer with a clean, modern result.
Finished result — 230V LED stair lights installed along the staircase wall
The customer in Weybridge had a set of recessed stair lights running along the staircase wall — the kind of low-level step lighting that guides you up and down in the dark. The existing system was running on 12V, fed from a transformer, and the lights themselves were old and tired. The customer wanted them replaced with modern 230V LED fittings for better light output, lower running costs, and a cleaner look.
The challenge with this type of job is the wiring. The original 12V lights were fed from a central transformer, meaning the cable runs and connection points didn't line up with what a direct 230V installation would need. Simply swapping the fittings wasn't an option — the wiring had to be altered to suit the new system.
The customer was also keen to avoid unnecessary disruption. The staircase had recently been decorated and they didn't want to end up with a full replastering and repainting job just to get new lights in.
The standard approach for this kind of conversion would be to chase a channel down the wall at each light position — cutting a slot in the plaster, running the cable, and making good afterwards. On a freshly decorated staircase, that means patching, skimming, and repainting. Not ideal.
The solution was to chase in 35mm flush back boxes at each light position instead. By recessing a flush box into the wall at every fitting location, the wiring connections could be made neatly inside the box, the cable could be kept short and contained, and the new 230V LED fitting would sit flush over the top — covering the box completely and leaving a clean finish.
It's not the easiest approach — chasing individual boxes into a plastered wall takes more care and precision than running a single channel — but it saved the customer from having to redecorate the entire staircase. The wall was made good at each box position and the fittings covered the work completely.
The existing 12V transformer and associated wiring was removed. At each light position on the staircase wall, a 35mm flush back box was chased into the plaster, the wall made good around it, and the new 230V supply cable run to each box. The wiring was altered throughout to suit the direct 230V system — no transformer, no low-voltage driver, just a clean mains supply to each fitting.
The new 230V LED fittings were then installed into each flush box, wired up, and tested. The fittings sit flush against the wall with no visible fixings — a much cleaner result than the original installation.
The same approach was applied to a second staircase in the property, which had a similar layout and the same outdated 12V system. Both staircases were completed in the same visit.

The difference between a good electrician and an average one often comes down to how they approach the disruption side of a job. Anyone can run a cable — the skill is in doing it in a way that minimises the mess and the follow-on work for the customer.
Chasing 35mm flush boxes rather than full cable channels is more time-consuming on the day, but it means the customer doesn't have to call a plasterer and decorator afterwards. On a staircase that's already been finished, that's a significant saving — both in cost and in hassle.
The 230V LED fittings themselves are also a meaningful upgrade. They're brighter, more efficient, and don't rely on a transformer that can fail. The customer now has a system that will last for years with no maintenance beyond the occasional bulb change — and even that's rare with quality LED fittings.
