What started as a fault-finding callout for external lights on a garden room in Surbiton turned into a same-visit socket installation — a weatherproof deck socket fed cleanly from the garden room supply, run in conduit along the decking frame and fully certified. The customers had been wanting the socket for a while and were delighted to get it done at the same time.
The customer in Surbiton had a garden room at the bottom of their garden — the kind of well-built timber structure that doubles as a home office, hobby room or outdoor entertaining space. The garden room had its own electrical supply run from the house, feeding internal lighting and a couple of sockets inside the room itself.
Brad Neil Electrical was originally called out to fault-find a problem with the external lights — the lights on the outside of the garden room had stopped working. The fault was traced and rectified. While on site, the customer mentioned they had always wanted a socket on the decking outside the garden room — somewhere to plug in a lawnmower, power tools, or outdoor appliances without running an extension lead from inside.
The garden room supply had sufficient capacity, the cable run was straightforward, and the job could be done cleanly in the same visit. Brad quoted on the spot and the customer was happy to proceed.

The socket chosen was a surface-mounted weatherproof deck socket — the type that sits flush with the decking surface and has a hinged lid to keep moisture out when not in use. This type of socket is ideal for outdoor entertaining areas where a standard wall-mounted socket would be in the way or visually intrusive.
The cable was run from the garden room supply in black PVC conduit, clipped neatly along the base of the decking frame to keep it protected and tidy. An external weatherproof junction box was fitted at the connection point, with the cable entering and exiting via correctly sized glands to maintain the IP rating of the enclosure.
The circuit was protected by the existing RCD on the garden room supply — confirmed to be correctly rated and in good working order. The new socket was tested on completion, the circuit was verified with an insulation resistance test, and a minor works certificate was issued.
The whole job — fault-finding the lights and installing the socket — was completed in a single visit. The customers were pleased to get both done at once without needing to book a second appointment.

Outdoor electrical installations are subject to more demanding requirements than indoor work — moisture, temperature variation, UV exposure and physical impact all need to be accounted for in the choice of equipment and the method of installation. Cable runs outside must be protected against mechanical damage — conduit, armoured cable, or burial at the correct depth depending on the route.
All enclosures and junction boxes must be correctly rated for outdoor use, with cable entries sealed via appropriate glands to maintain the IP rating.
The installation must be tested and a certificate issued — a minor works certificate for additions to existing circuits, or an electrical installation certificate for new circuits.
