The Call
The customer — a regular — rang after catching the garden lighting cable with a trimmer while tidying the borders. It's one of the most common causes of dead garden lighting: the cable runs close to the surface through planted beds, and a trimmer or spade can cut straight through it without any warning.
On top of the cable damage, the existing junction box had deteriorated to the point where it needed replacing. Junction boxes in garden installations are exposed to moisture, temperature swings and ground movement year-round. Over time the seals fail, water gets in, and the connections inside corrode. This one had reached the end of its life.
The trimmer damage — conductors exposed where the cable was cut, with the old failed junction box visible to the right. Both needed sorting before the circuit could be made safe and the lights restored.
The Work
The damaged section of cable was cut back to clean conductor on both sides and the repair made properly — no tape-and-hope. The old junction box was removed and replaced with a new IP-rated weatherproof unit, correctly gelled and sealed for outdoor use.
The new box is a significant step up from what was there before — a robust enclosure with proper cable glands and a gel-filled interior that keeps moisture out even when buried or sitting in damp ground. It's the right solution for a permanent outdoor installation rather than a temporary fix.
The circuit was tested, the lights confirmed working, and the job was wrapped up in a single visit. Customer rang yesterday, Brad was there today.

Why Garden Lighting Cables Get Cut — and How to Avoid It
Trimmer and spade damage is the single most common cause of dead garden lighting. A few things make it more likely:
Shallow burial — cables installed without adequate depth are vulnerable to any garden tool. BS 7671 recommends a minimum depth of 500mm for cables in domestic gardens, or mechanical protection if shallower.
No cable route markers — without surface markers or a cable route plan, it's easy to forget where cables run, especially in planted borders where the route isn't visible.
Degraded sheathing — older cables lose flexibility and the outer sheath becomes brittle over time, making them more susceptible to damage from even light contact.
Junction box deterioration — outdoor junction boxes have a finite lifespan. Seals degrade, water ingress causes corrosion, and connections become unreliable. A box that's been in the ground for years should be inspected periodically.
The fix is usually straightforward — a clean repair to the cable and a new weatherproof junction box will restore the circuit properly. Tape repairs are not suitable for outdoor or buried installations.
